I used my orbital sander and 180 grit to get the rust off and it did work but there is just too much rust and the rust is in all the cracks and hard to reach places, so the best thing for me at this point is to have the car re-blasted lightly.

They really cut into the rubber a lot more than a blunter grit like silicon carbide or chilled iron IMHO.
