Jet Milling Machine

How best to raise a milling machine

Standard answer here seems to be to use a couple of 4x4 or 6x6 front to back or weld up something from I beam or channel.. leave enough clear width to allow a pallet jack to go under even if you do own one. They can be rented when you move house. They make alarms that ring a bell when water sits on the floor.

I have a Jet JMD-15 that I bought used several years ago. It works fine but has it's limitations such as the round column. Aside from that it seems to be a nice machine. I have used it for light milling with success but it's main function in my shop is for drilling and tapping.

General | Lifting a milling machine

There are more than likely some threaded holes on the sides of the base of the machine-two towards the front. Bolts (or swivel lugs) may be threaded into these holes to use as lifting points. Lower the knee to the bottom of travel, swing the head (assuming it does rotate) so the spindle is at the lowest point, and slide the ram to the most rear ...

WTK: Square vs Round Column Mill/Drills?

The Jet is a round-column drill, but quite hefty weighing in at 660 lbs for the head alone. It's very solid, and if I use it as a second-operation machine, it really shines. The ways are ground quite nicely and although it's chinese in manufacture, Jet seems to have used somewhat stringent quality controls.

Below is my JET mill purchased new in 1999 for my garage shop. It has served me very well. After 8 years of daily use it still has only .015 backlash in the X and Y axis. I use it mostly for spot drilling, boring and light milling. It is well cared for.

anyone familiar with msc milling machines or kent

I have to agree with ARFF79 the Bridgeport is a bit overpriced, but it is an original Bridgeport which is a quality machine. The MSC is likely made in China, if it is; chances are it will be more trouble than it is worth. I would check both machines for backlash in the feed screws .020"-.030" is common on a well used machine.

General | Grease or Oil in Mill Head?

Hey all, I am getting ready to put a new motor on my TOS FNK 25 vertical mill, which is belt drive, but has a 10:1 gear reduction in the head. The previous owner had just pumped endless grease into the head, some of it had hardened, very nasty. I took the 6 hours to tear it right down, and clean...

General | Round column jet mill/drill

I acquired a Jet round column JM-28 complex Milling/drilling machine. I understand the issue with round columns and why not many people like them, but I've been thinking how I can make the table raise and lower function stay on track and true. My best ideas so far are tramming the head in...
